My provider coded both 61312 & 61107. I told him per the CPT guidelines these to codes cannot be billed together unless .
CPT codes 61322 (Craniectomy/craniotomy for intracranial hypertension) and 61107 (Twist drill hole for EVD/monitoring) can generally only be coded together when they represent distinct, separate, and unrelated procedures performed at different operative sessions on the same day, stage procedure, separate anatomical sites.
If the catheter placement was done for a separate purpose or distinct site, please clarify in the note.
His response was: they are two distinct procedures and the lateral ventricle is the different location. but how do I specify that. It was done at the same time. The placement was place at the same location and the bone removal but I did not need to go into the brain with the hemicraniectomy but did for the drain placement. Is there a different code when EVD place during a craniectomy? I just don't know how to do this. can you advise?
