we are having a discussin in our office on the correct way to bill for services performed in the ED. Our physician was called in to consult on an emergency room patient who was later admitted to another physician as observation status. from what i have read we can bill for our physician services using the ed codes but another biller states that we need to bill using the office e&m codes with pos as er.

what is the correct way to bill this?

thanks for your help

When the patient has already been registered as an ER patient and your physician is called in after the ER physician has performed an assement then you use Er visit levels. If the patient was in the ER and never regisitered as an ER patient and was not assessed by the ER physician then you would use the regular E&M levels.
