This is a simple question. Patient has a two view lumbar spine and the diagnosis that came over on the report is pain. Can I code this low back pain simply because its for the lumbar spine (M54.5 or do I code it unspecified back pain M54.9)?

Thanks,

Ok to code Low back pain

Hi,

I am a radiology coder. I am of the understanding that it is appropriate to code pain of the location that the x-ray is looking at even if it does not specify location in the clinical history. Yes, I would code low back pain in your situation.
