I have a patient that preferred full sedation for a colonoscopy due to a history of drug abuse and concern with conscious sedation. Insurance has denied the anesthesia as a contractual obligation. Is anyone aware of a modifier or diagnosis that would be appropriate in this situation to justify the level of anesthesia? Thanks for your help!

The only thing I am aware of would be an ABN for Medicare patients, if that is done prior to the procedure you use the GA modifier.

After the fact I don't think there is anything you can do but learn from the experience and avoid it in the future.
