A patient is having abdominal pain and comes in for an EGD & colonscopy. The provider performs biopies that are sent to pathology. The path shows gastritis and esophogitis. Is the correct dx codes the abdominal pain first, followed by the codes for the gastritis and esophogitis or do you leave off the abdominal pain, since it is a symptom? This would be coding for professional charges only.

Guidelines instructs that you do not code the symptoms once you have the definitive diagnosis. So do not code the abdominal pain once it is proven that the diagnosis is what has caused the pain.
