My doc has a patient referred to him for a colonoscopy screening. While at the visit the patient has said that she has diarrhea and rectal bleeding over the year. Does the doctor code New Patient and list diag. as diarrhea & rectal bleeding along with V76.12 or does he code Consult with the diag. codes?

In order to bill for a consult, it is the intent of the originating physician that determines whether or not you have a consultation. If the original physician is asking for your advice on a GI problem and during the visit your MD decides that a colonoscopy is needed, you have a consult. However if the intent of the original physician is to have your MD perform the colonoscopy...no consult
