Hi. Anesthesia coder brand new to E/M coding and Plastic surgery. We recently started billing for a plastic surgeon who had a question regarding post op complications after a global period has expired. For example, If a patient comes in his office with wound dehiscence and global period has expired can he bill for the post op complication? I believe he can since the global has expired, but again brand new to this specialty and wasn't sure if there are exceptions? Thank you.

Not all post-op complications are included in the global package. Medicare pays for post-op complications IN the global period that require a trip back to the OR. Other payers have their own rules.

Once the global period is over, it's over. He can bill for complications that do or do not require a return to the OR.
