It is my understanding that a provider has to document the total time spent in order to bill the new psychotherapy codes. Is this correct? Thanks

Yes the psychotherapy codes now follow CPT time based conventions, that was part of the 2013 change. To bill the lowest level of therapy the provider must document a minimum of 16 minutes spent with the patient/family. This must be a part of the note, not tracked by other personnel or the EMR.

In regards to Psychotherapy codes, you indicated that at least 16 minutes must be documented- I am assuming the provider must document the start time then as well right?
In the past, 2010 and 2011, is it true that total duration was needed as well as start time in the note?
