ER physician referrs patient to a general surgeon for a rectal abscess, is this considered a consultation (cpt 99241-999245)? Specialists does not report back to the ER doctor. Surgeon exams and schedules pt back in 2 wks for a follow up. Thank you.

This would not be considered a consultation for two reasons: first, the surgeon did not provide an opinion to the requesting provider. Second, it sounds like the surgeon has assumed care for the condition. I would bill it as a new patient and not a consultation.
