We recently went from being a Family Practice to a multi-specialty practice. When a Medicare patient is in the hospital and a consult (performed by one of our specialists( is requested by one of our family practice physicians, would the specialist bill the appropriate initial inpatient code and the family practice provider bill their initial visit with the AI modifier?

Thanks for any help that you may be able to provide.

I think it helps to think if the 9922X codes as "initial care day". In your scenario both providers would be able to bill the 9922X code since they are of diffrent specialtys. Only the admitting MD should append the AI modifier.
