Consult Vs. New Patient

If a provider refers a patient to a specialist and during that visit the specialist schedules follow up appointments . Is this still a consult? or since he is taking on care of the problem would it be considered a new patient?

Since the MD made the decision to assume care in this visit, it would still be the consultation visit. The subsequent visits will then be established patient office/inpt visits. Check the notes in the consultation subsection of E & M. The first paragraph, added in 2013, does state "...to determine whether to accept responsibility for ongoing management of the patient's entire care or for the care of a specific condition or problem."
