I just found out a gen surg in our group has been billing a consult with a colonscopy. Situation is pt is set up for colonoscopy via their PCP....surgeon meets pt that day, examines and dictates wht he calls a consult, and then performs the scope.
Pt is already scheduled for colonoscopy when he meets them...and I think work up is inclusive of procedure.
I am meeting with him tomorrow.
There is no request for consult.

My question is...is there ANY situation where he might be able to get away with a new pt visit? Seeing as how he meets the pt at the hospital for their scheduled colonoscopy...is there really a justifiable visit allowed for the decison to perform procedure?

I am just covering my bases...I don't think he is gonna like what I tell him.
 
Consultation prior to colonoscopy

I work for a GI group. There is no consultation prior to the colonoscopy. Any H&P, etc done immediately prior to the procedure is considered to be included.
 
I am finding some postings that are saying if the patient comes in with symptoms, then an e/m service "may" be justified...but I am not getting anything concrete. Anyone have any solid info on this?
