I work for a large physician group. All providers use the same EMR so when a consult occurs between two of our providers there is no need to physically forward a report since the referring has access to it.

(1) What does our specialist need to document to satisfy the third 'R' for billing consultations? If they note "CC: Dr. Smith",... would that suffice? Our MAC is WPS J8 if anyone has reference material from them specifically. Thanks!

(2) Also,... if you, as an internal auditor, do not see the necessary notation indicating consultant alerted the referring would you ding them on their audit or just comment that it could potentially be deemed unbillable by a recovery auditor and keep on an educational level?

We have them use a statement along the lines of, "A copy of this note has been made available to the requesting physician through the electronic record."
