Our physicians frequently perform inpatient consultations. The requesting MDs are beginning to specify a particular physician on their requests. If the on call physician performs the consultation instead of the physician stated on the request, can we still bill a consultation? Can anyone offer some input on this issue? Maria

Who performed the service?

If the PCP requests Dr A but Dr B of the same practice/specialty actually performs the consult, then you code the consult for Dr B. (I'm assuming that Dr B documents appropriately and sends a report to the requesting provider.)
