I have a surgeon who wants to bill a consultation. I have written documentation of the request from the referring provider and the surgeon has not assumed care for the condition. My concern is the "communication" back to the referring provider: in the EMR I can see the referring provider has reviewed the surgeon's notes, but the surgeon has not sent a specific response to the referring provider; more testing is being ordered and the surgeon will communicate all of the findings once the testing is complete. Can I bill for a consult based on the referring provider reviewing the record in the EMR?
