I have questions on a corpectomy report and would appreciate the help
Anterior cervical decompression & fusion with corpectomy
1. C6 corpectomy with greater than 75 % of vertebral body removed
2. C7 hemi Corpectomy with less than 50% of vertebral body removed
3. C5-C7 anterior instrumentation and fusion
4. C5-C7 interbody peek cage placement
5. microscope for microdissection
6. Harvesting of local bone for autograft

I coded
63081 for corpectomy
22554 C5 C6
22585 C6 C7
22845 instrumentation
69990 microscope
22851 cage C5-C7
29036 graft

I'm confused on the hemi corpectomy I know more than 50% has to be documented to code the corpectomy and this is less than 50%at the C7 level how would you code this?
truly appreciate the help

Hi,

As per AANS (American Association of Neurosurgeons) 63081 is eligible to get paid if corpectomy is done on >50% of the body of the vertebra. Please review the below link for further information.

However, in the CPT book, no where it is mentioned about the percentage of excision. I think you can consider CPT 63082 for the second level corpecomy. Moreover as per the description of the code 63081, it is stated as partial or complete Vertebral corpectomy (vertebral body resection), partial or complete anterior approach with decompression of spinal cord and/or nerve root(s); cervical, single segment[/COLOR].
