My doctor seen a mom for 30 minutes to discuss her child behavior problems (11yrs old). The child was not in the office with the mom. My doctor referred the mom to an psychiatrist for a psy eval.

How do I code this?

You would use code 99242 for a consultation visit because he has spend 30 minutes with the patient's mother.

With the limited information, I do not see this as a consultation.

You may be able to bill the OV based on time as the key component/controlling factor when counseling and coordination of care dominates more than 50% of the patient and/or family encounter. Total encounter time, time spent counseling/coordinating care with a summary of the discussion are required documentation.
