Any advice on getting a job starting out? I had planned to transition careers to medical coding and obtained two certificates (apprentice level) but have applied for close to 100 jobs with no response. Additionally, so many jobs require upwards of 5 years of experience, even the ones that say they're entry level. Any tips on finding those that are truly entry level?

Instead of looking exclusively for a coding job, why don't you try to get your foot in the door at a hospital/practice in another area of revenue, where you are more likely to find roles that don't require lots of coding experience? Registration, pre-authorization, scheduling, billing, medical records, etc. All of those roles are within the revenue cycle and will give you some experience along the way. When something comes available in the coding department, you'll be an internal candidate (unless you find that what you're doing is far more rewarding than coding!).

Here's the reality check. You won't find very many entry-level specific coding jobs, because there just aren't any these days. Some of the Risk Adjustment payers will hire new coders, but those jobs are tough to get, because there are so many candidates.

See my comment above...... your focus should be getting your foot in the door first, and then paying attention to job postings.

What is your advice with someone that is currently in a foot in the door role but can’t seem to move up? I am NHA certified as a billing and coding specialist as well as CRC certified. Doing a self paced course for CPC. Current role is retrieval associate in medical records. Everything I have looked requires hands on experience.

Ask..... go to the coding manager or other leadership, express your interest, and ask how you can position yourself to move into your preferred role. Do they even know you're interested? Has everything been going well in your current role? Just because 'everything required hands-on experience' doesn't mean they won't be willing to train a current employee. Ask to job shadow. Find out what you can do to improve your chances. Volunteer to help out. Ask for someone to mentor you.

my company, Guidehouse, hired me on for billing cycle even though i am a CPC-A. they post new jobs frequently and man are remote! i would look there for something coding related- or start in PFS/Accounting to get your foot in the door as Pam said, then begin to look up and around for new opportunities!
Hello do you have any opening for CPC-A . I finished school and got my CPC-A and looking for entry level position.

Hello, I am currently a lab processing supervisor. I just passed my coding exam and my manager is allowing me to start doing billing and coding part time for the lab. I got a little bit of training from the current biller and I'm totally lost but grateful to be able to have this door-open for me. I am currently about to start Practicode to remove my the -A-. Any advice on how to tackle this mountain?

I am also new to medical coding and seeking an entry-level position. But a minimum of 2 years of experience is needed. Where will the entry-level job seekers find a job?
I work for a very large organization that does hire brand new coders - however, we do get many internal applicants. My advice is to get any job you can in a healthcare system - medical records, patient access, etc. and then move internally. I started working as a patient access (service) rep in the ED while I was doing my coursework, and then was able to move into a coding role that opened up. Looking at the profiles for some of the more recent coders on our team, they have all moved from similar roles - PSR, MA, transcription, medical records.
