We have a provider that is reporting 10 units of 17250 because the wound being cauterized was "enormous!!!!! and required the use of 20 silver nitrate sticks", so he decided to billed for 10 units of 17250.

My understanding of 17250 is, it is a per wound code and in this scenario should only be reported as 1 unit, regardless of how many silver nitrate sticks were used. I have tried to find guidelines on reporting 17250 that would support my thought process but am unable to find anything other than the MUE associated with 17250 indicating that it would be medically unlikely to report greater than 3 units of 17250 per DOS.

If you have any documentation that would help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,
Rick
