Wiki Critical Care in global of CABG

I have seen this question being asked many times and answers are not specific to our specialty so I will just start with examples of my questions.

If our surgeon performs the procedure then monitors his care while he is in the hospital. Procedures ranging from CABG, Aortic Valve replacement, to Aneurysm repairs. If the patients case has complications while in hospital can we charge Critical Care even though it is still our specialty and within the global?

Now say the patient came in for a CABG. Then during the stay it was complicated by respiratory failure. Pt has feeding tubes in place waiting for PEG placement. Discussing her with other specialist.
Or if a pt has some tansient left sided weakness
Pt develops renal failure
Pt develops rapid a-fib
a complicated course from cardio shock and still on vent

Just some examples. I know some are related to our specialty but some patients are now in critical care. Does not happen often I just want to be aware of coding options. Thank you

The simplest way to answer this question is:
Would the patient have had/developed these conditions without the surgery.
If the answer is no then it's in the global.
Respiratory failure is somewhat of a gray area. If it's as a result of the surgery then no. Others will tell you yes because it's an unforeseen circumstance but it's gotta be true respiratory failure and not just the vent management most surgeons like to bill CC for post surgery.
