QUESTION:

We are coding for the CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) times on the facility side of the hospital (CPT) and have ran into an issue. If the anesthesiologist takes a break for 10 minutes and the CRNA comes in and fills in for the Dr. can we code/bill for that time? The anesthesiologist is saying we cannot bill for the CRNA times because it was his break which he is intitled to according to CMS and he really did all the work (none of which is documented)
Is this correct and does anyone have a rule for when they code for CRNA times and does the CRNA have to sign the patient chart at the end of anesthesia time.
Thank you all for any help you can provide.
