How would you code an acute CVA with encephalopathy?
 
It would be two codes one for the CVA and one for encephalopathy. There is a coding clinic from 2017 for this see 2017 Second Quarter page 9. If the encephalopathy is directly attributed as the cause of the encephalopathy you use code G93.49 for other encephalopathy. Encephalopathy is not integral to the CVA as not all patients have encephalopathy post CVA.
