Hello,
Patient came in the the emergency room 18 weeks (no prenatal care)with vaginal bleeding. Ultrasound revealed no heart sounds and all but fetal head appears in cervical region. Pelvic exam revealed fetal parts coming through the cervical os. The patient was admitted and given Cytotec suppository to complete spontanous abortion. The next morning the patient delivered the remaining products of conception and was discharged.
The physician is wanting to code this as either a 59855 or a 59409.
Per ACOG guidelines, 18 weeks is not a viable fetus so 59409 is incorrect.
Since the the patient had already began the spontaneous abortion, would the H&P and D/C summary be all that could be coded?
