Hello....I have a question on what you would use for the following:

L5/S1: DDD marked by posterior disc space narrowing, endplate sclerosis

I think M51.37, "other intervertebral disc degeneration, lumbosacral region". However, another co-worker said M51.17, which is "Intervertebral disc disorders with radiculopathy, lumbosacral region".

Any help you can give would be awesome!

Thanks!

This is what I'm seeing in the ICD-10 index. Was there mention of neuritis, radiculitis, radiculopathy, or sciatica? If so, it would be M51.17. If not, it would be M51.37

I do not see a linkage in the radiology report to the symptoms. Lots of people have DDD (in fact most of us will if we're lucky - it means we're old) but it doesn't cause symptoms. Correlation does not equal Causation. Unless a subsequent provider links the DDD to the pain, then using M51.17 would be a reach, IMO.
