We recently had a patient who was admitted to the hospital for a cervical cerclage at 21 weeks after cervical incompetence was noted during an office visit. The procedure was started but surgeon was unable to complete it with findings of a dilated cervix with bulging amniotic sac and a very thin cervix. Patient delivered a liveborn fetus not too long after.

Would this scenario call for just the delivery CPT code?

Depends on what the documentation looks like. You could possibly report the cerclage with a modifier -53 or -52.

I am not an expert and still learning. I am thinking... Per ACOG, if pt delivered at 20 w, then we code a delivery. I would code 59320-53 for failed cerclage and vaginal delivery Z37.0
