I am currently coding for a dermatology practice where the provider believes dermabrasion should be considered medically necessary for patients who have residual scarring following Mohs surgery. However, all payer policies I’ve reviewed classify dermabrasion as a cosmetic procedure, and we are experiencing a high volume of claim denials.

Has anyone had success obtaining coverage for dermabrasion in these scenarios? If so, have appeals been effective?
