I work in Family Practice and we have a fair number of Diabetes patients with multiple manifestations. I am wondering what is the proper way to code for this.

Example: Physician dictates Diabetes type 2, good control with nephropathy and diabetic retinopathy.

Do you bill: 250.40, 583.91, 250.50, and 362.01???

Thanks for your help!!!

If diabetic macular oedema is present, code 250.50, 362.01-362.06 which is apropriate depending upon documentation whether diabetic retinopathy or diabetic proliferative retinopathy and use additional code of 362.07.

Diabetic macular edema always should go with one of the codes from 362.01-362.06.

If only diabetic retinopathy is present code 250.50 and 362.01.
