Our pediatric endocrinologists see patients who are referred to them because they are short for their age. I am told that a Short Stature diagnosis could be used if the patient is less than the third percentile on the growth chart. They commonly see patients who are less than the fifth percentile, and these patients don't clinically meet the criteria for Short Stature. I am stumped as to which diagnosis code to recommend they use.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just my thoughts but I would think the 783.43 would be best since it list other diagnosis'es that reference the code. however have you looked at 783.9

783.9 Other symptoms concerning nutrition, metabolism, and development

783.43 Short stature

Growth failure

Growth retardation

Lack of growth

Physical retardation
