I am a new coder and have been told a diagnostic mammogram is an abnormal mammogram. How do you code a diagnostic mammogram with a diagnoses of a breast mass. In the impression, it states that the mass is not anything to worry about and should proceed with yearly mammograms.

You code the breast mass. You code from the impression, if the impression states breast mass then that is what you code. If the provider documents that there was a suspicion for malignancy then you can code the V71.1 first listed with breast mass secondary.
