I have been reading up on coding for diabetes. I have found many articles that say uncontrolled and controlled are no longer used in diagnosis coding. Upon reading some also say that we are to code the type of diabetes with hyperglycemia if it's uncontrolled. This would be in conjunction with any other diabetes complications. Has anyone else been doing this? Are you simply just coding the complication only? I want to make sure I am getting this right. Not coding uncontrolled or controlled is throwing me off. I appreciate any and all help. Thanks.

I work for a primary care office and we see many patients with diabetes.
You are correct, code all manifestations of the disease. E11.65 is used for uncontrolled Type II DM in addition to any other combination DM codes the patient carries.
