We are a practice of 5 general surgeons. In rare instances we will round for another surgical physician (only 1 doctor in his practice) on HIS patients when the need arises and he cannot be there. I would think we would not charge a consult code but a subsequent day E/M since we are rounding out of courtesy and not taking care of his patient. Is there also some type of modifier to use in this case to differenciate that this is not our patient? Thanks for any input.

No, if you are billing for your services provided to his patients there is no modifier. I agree you are not providing a consult and a subsequent care day would be appropriate unless they are in a global period. If you are a covering provider you should bill the service the same way the provider you are covering for would have. So if it is global that means you don't get to bill.
