I am wondering if there are documentation requirements when using an assistant surgeon. We are not a teaching facility. I am wonderin about it because suddenly my surgeons are using assistance on procedures that are usually not assisted with. Should there be some kind of statements that tells why the assist was needed?

No not that I know of. At a teaching facility, with medicare patients, the Primary Surgeon, must say : Ex: Resident not available, so therefor Dr such & such was there to assist me. Then all you need is a 80 or 82 modifier! :p
