Double Dipping?

Hi, I need some clarification on what constitutes as Double Dipping.

Specifically, I am working in the PEDS dept and come across a ton of charges where the patient comes in with viral URI + general symptoms where the physician orders strep/COVID & Flu tests etc. I count this under the data portion of the MDM table.

When I take a look at the charge entry, the physician is also billing for the LAB test (For example: Strep Test - CPT 87880). If I use the Strep test for E/M leveling and bill for the 87880, is that considered Double Dipping?

It depends on the type of test. Double-dipping doesn't apply when the test doesn't require interpretation. This is in the Services Reported Separately section of the E/M chapter of your CPT manual.

Tests that do not require separate interpretation (eg, tests that are results only) and are analyzed as part of MDM do not count as an
independent interpretation, but may be counted as ordered or reviewed for selecting an MDM level.
