Is it ever okay to code dictation when it is in draft status, for either facility or professional coding? I was told by a previous employer to never code when in draft status because the dictation isn't complete; however the new manager with the hospital is telling us it is okay to code from draft for facility charges. She said it's okay to code from draft status even if part of the dictation, such as physical exam, is missing as long as there is a diagnosis given. Can anyone clarify the correct protocol. thanks!
