We are starting to do drug testing in our office and I am not lab savvy. We will be using a dipstick method that will test for 12 different Class A drugs. This is what I think I should use: 80300, drug screen, any number of drug classes from Class A capable of being read by direct optical observation per date of service. Since we are testing for 12 different drugs, should it be 80300 x12. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No. CPT code 80300 is a single unit code. Page 472 of the 2015 CPT Codebook Professional Edition states:

"To report five (5) presumptive drug classes performed using a direct optical observation device procedure (drug test cup or five separate dipsticks), report 80300 once per date of service."

Billing is 80300 x 1 for the service you described.

Thanks very much for your input. I was getting different answers from the manufacture and from other coders about the code.
