Can anyone explain the difference between code 864.05 (laceration liver without open wound) vs. 864.15 (laceration liver w open wound).

A patient stabs himself & a laceration his stomach and liver results. Is this automatically "open wound" since organ has been lacerated??

Thank you.

An open wound is a wound open to the surface, like an open stomach wound that also lacerates the liver, a liver laceration without an open wound can occur say from a massive blow to the abdomen that while it does not penetrate the skin can cause lacerations to internal organs such as the liver.
