a patient comes in for a follow up of a vertebrae fracture that has not healed yet. The note indicates a couple months earlier the patient was in a MVA. Would it be appropriate to append an E code for the MVA even though this isn't the initial accident?

I have always heard that E codes can only help, not hurt a claim, but I thought I would see what others had to say.

My feeling is, if the fracture is related to the MVA then the E code certainly still applies as it denotes the cause of the fracture.
