Wiki E&M and NCS or EMG on Same Day

My provider supervises his own NCS and EMG, after the studies he often meets with the patient to discuss the results and alter medications if needed. He would like to bill an E&M for these services. Everything I'm reading states you can only bill an E&M when it is "separate and identifiable". Any thoughts? Thanks.

Face to Face does not always = Billable

It's been a long time since I did neuro coding but if the patient presented with a new complaint and the physician decided to do EMG/NCV that day, the visit and the interpretation are both billable.

If the patient was seen and returned on a later date for the EMG/NCV and the physician simply had the patient wait for the results rather than calling them with the result, it is not separately billable. Face to face does not equal billable. The service/encounter has to be significantly separately identifiable AND MEDICALLY NECESSARY. Doesn't sound like there was an interim history, ROS or physical exam. Giving the results in person rather than over the phone was just a courtesy.

Hope this helps
