Hi all, how would you code the following:

DX: T1DM in good control but has frequent hypoglycemia
Code as: E10.9 T1DM w/o complication or E10.64 T1DM w/hypoglycemia?

Had the DX stated "T1DM with hypoglycemia" code E10.64 (obvious), but the use of the word "frequent" hypoglycemia is making me question the code choices E10.9 or E10.64.

TIA

Well from the sound of it, the patient has DM1 but at the time of the visit is in good control. If they are saying frequent hypoglycemia then the medication/insulin might be too strong causing those events, but from that statement "T1DM in good control but has frequent hypoglycemia" it would be coded a E10.9.

If you can take a look at the lab values and see if his blood sugar was low, and if it happens to be, then maybe try to query the provider if possible.

hope it helps!
