I am wondering if I am able to code use the combo code E11.- code for a patient who has Exudative age-related macular degeneration & Type 2 diabetes mellitus Type 2 diabetes mellitus in an outpatient setting? Documentation does not state they are related, but if I can then I can remove the E11.9 & possibly use E11.311. I just am not sure about the terminology of non proliferative in the code description, but not in my documentation.
 
You can not assume the AMD is caused/related to the diabetes. Therefore, you should bill what the exam notes state. The E11.9 and the appropriate code for the AMD.
