Hello all. I have a question in regard to E11.A. Type II DM without complications in remission.
If a patient is in remission is it appropriate to code DM with any complications such as E11.40?

My understanding E11.A Type II DM without complications in remission- does not mean that the DM is cured, but is under control without active medication.

Then I saw this article:

https://victoryrcm.com/blog/icd-10-...t-every-coder-and-billing-team-must-know.html

that's FAQ area states:

Can E11.A be used with diabetes complication codes?

A: Yes, if complications persist despite remission, code both E11.A and the appropriate complication codes (e.g., E11.A + E11.42 for diabetic polyneuropathy).

Am I wrong in my thinking that E11.A is only used if the patient has NO complications?
Would you still code E11.40 and not E11.A if the patient has neuropathy?
Or would you code E11.A and G62(other specified polyneuropathy) or G63 (polyneuropathy in disease classified elsewhere)?

I think this is a good reminder to consider the source. That link goes to a revenue cycle management company’s blog, not an article from an official coding authority.

Reviewing the 2026 ICD-10-CM manual, the RCM company’s interpretation contradicts the Excludes1 note.

E11.A Type 2 diabetes mellitus without complications, in remission.

The book includes an Excludes1 note for Type 2 diabetes mellitus with complications (E11.0–E11.8).

The intent seems clear to me: if the patient has complications of diabetes, use the appropriate complication category (E11.0–E11.8), not E11.A which specifically says “without complications."

Until an official source such as Coding Clinic told me otherwise, I’d follow the Excludes1 note in the ICD-10-CM manual.
