Wiki ED and extension of L&D

Our current facility has 3 beds designated in the ED as L&D emergency beds. The ED provider does not see the patient. Patient is only seen by OB provider. We register the patient as entering through the ED for the L&D bed.

1. Can the ED beds be considered an extension of L&D?
2. What code range could be billed for the L&D patients? ED codes (99281-99285), Observation codes (99217-99220, 99234-99236) and/or Office or Other Outpatient Services (99201-99215)?
