So I need some guidance on how to properly code and sequence this encounter. Patient presents for follow up after ED visit for RUQ abdominal pain. ED notes that this is post-op pain and assigns G89.18 (Other acute postprocedural pain). My provider only assigned a DX of Z98.890 (Other specified postprocedural states). I'm not sure how to code this encounter because it is documented that the patient hasn't had any pain since ED encounter and it was planned to see a different Dr to discuss treatment. Should I code Z09 and Z98.890 since the patient hasn't had any pain since the ED visit. Should I use the G89.18 and Z98.890, or should I code for the abdominal pain R10.11 and Z98.890?

Any help is appreciated!

The visit may be coded as Z09 (follow-up after completed treatment) with Z98.890 or as an encounter for surgical aftercare, depending on the timing of the surgery.

Hello to me this scenario is a little bit confusing. I understood that Dr. A did the surgery, Dr. B who works in ED saw the patient for abdominal pain. IF Dr A and Dr B are different specialties that will be different rules: for Dr. B from ED can code this e/m for abdominal pain. Now Dr. C, your doctor, is seeing same patient and the question is Is Dr. C belongs to the same specialty that performed the surgery? If yes, then it will be postop 99024. If Dr. C is another specialty then you can code E/M for abdominal pain with Z98890.

The physician I am coding for is their PCP, at a separate facility.
