A patient is seen in the ED and the patient is also seen by a vascular surgeon in the ED to review the patients problem, Can the surgeon charge for that visit using one of the ED visit codes (99281-99285)? Can the surgeon bill using one of these codes if the ED physician is also billing one of these for the same day? Thanks.

Only ONE doctor uses ER codes

When more than one physician sees a patient in the ER, only one of the physicians will be using the ER codes (99281-99285) - typically this will be the ER physician.

Other physicians may have an outpatient consult, or a hospital admission, or an outpatient (new or established) visit - all depending on circumstances and documentation.
