Dear All,

Need some help to find why, N85.00 can't be coded with N86. There is an exclude 1 note in the ICD 10 guidelines; however, while informing our doctors they want to know the reason. Our OB saying, these two conditions doesn't have any relation, then why we can't code together.

highly appreciate your help in this regards,

Thanks a lot

Sherin

At the front of your ICD-10 book in the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, in Section 1. A, paragraph 12, there is instruction and an example on the use of the excludes notes which should answer your provider's question. Excludes1 is intended to notify you that the conditions listed under the note should not be coded with that classification since there is another code assigned for those, but as noted in the instructions, an "exception to the Excludes1 definition is the circumstance when the two conditions are unrelated to each other."
