Wiki Exploration of mass on back

Our physician took a patient to the operating room for excision of a large Subcutaneous mass on the upper back. During the procedure our surgeon went through two different muscle layers. (He thought that it may be a intramuscular lipoma) However the reason for the mass was just hypertrophoied muscle. Once this was found out the surgeon closed the wound and no biopsies were taken. We are looking for possible guidance on where to start with this. Any help is appreciated!
