Sometimes our physician will perform an extended TEE during the entire Valve Surgery. The only thing I can come up with to get reimbursement for this is to add the 22 modifier. Has anyone else had this situation? How did you code the TEE?
Thanks!

Can you please explain what you mean by an extended TEE?

There is an intra-op TEE 93318 when the physician is monitoring the patient during the procedure. Please note that many carriers consider this part of the valve procedure and will not pay separately.

In our practice the anesthesiologist usually places the probe and monitors the patient during the procedure. Our physicians will come in after the procedure to verify that the valve was functioning appropriately. We will bill 93314 for this service.

I cannot think of a medically necessary reason why a doctor would need to do a TEE 93312 then continue that TEE throughout the entire procedure.
