I am hoping someone out there has come across this situation before. We have a patient who had a liver transplant from a deceased donor. After the patient's liver was removed and the donor liver implanted it was discovered that the donor liver was not functioning properly. The donor liver had to be removed and a portalcaval shunt was performed. The surgical site was closed. The patient is awaiting another liver.
How do we code this?? They essentially performed the entire procedure but then had to remove the donor liver. It has been suggested that we use CPT 47135 with modifier 53 but this doesn't seem correct.
