Our office has suddenly decided to change its financial policy. We are now being told that we do not accept payments. It doesn't matter how big the balance is, we are requiring payment in full (We are specialists, and do a lot of surgeries. And emergent surgeries). Can we suddenly change a financial policy and without sending notification that it's changed. Also can we send patients to collections because we want them to pay it in full, and they can't afford it?? Or can we turn them over when they've been making payments, because we now think it's not enough? I personally think this is horrible, and we are going to lose buisness. Not to mention we treat a lot of cancer patients, and very sick people. It just seems heartless to me.

The practice is free to set and change its financial policies. There is no legal rule regarding notification of a change in policy. You do NOT have to give notice to someone before you send the account to collections. You DO have to provide notice before charging a late fee. This is the minimum that federal law requires, your state may have other rules. Sometimes the law is heartless, I understand what you are saying.
