Hello OBGYN coders!
I am seeking help on understanding whether placement of Foley balloon is the same as placement of Bakri balloon? They both have the same goal- to stop bleeding after the delivery. I have notes how to bill for Bakri balloon (either mod 22 or unspecified code) but i am not sure if they are the same procedures/balloons. Thank you very much for your help in advance. Here is some extract from the note (the extraction of blood clot was already done- "cannula was inserted until reaching the uterine fundus under ultrasound guidance")
"However, a small amount of blood was then noted to be accumulating in the uterine cavity thus decision was made to administer a one time dose of 0.2mg of Methergine. A final pass revealed no further clot/tissue and gritty texture but again re-accumulation of hypoechoic fluid within endometrial cavity, concerning for ongoing bleeding and therefore decision made to place a 30cc intrauterine foley balloon for tamponade. At the completion of the procedure, minimal blood was seen draining from the uterus/tubing. Decision was made to admit patient for observation until the morning when foley balloon would be removed and the patient can be observed to assure no ongoing bleeding. Patient was stable at the conclusion of the procedure. "
Below IS an EXAMPLE FOR BAKRI balloon (extract from the note after blood clot was already removed)
"A bimanual sweep was performed with removal of clots from the lower uterine segment. The uterine fundus was firm. A Bakri balloon was advanced into the uterine fundus and filled with 250 cc of saline under ultrasound guidance. Brisk bleeding continued around the Bakri initially but then began to improve as FFP"
